Combat Chapped Lips for Good
Chapped lips are a marker of harsh winter weather, but it’s not only the cold and wind that create an environment for dry skin. Chapped lips can actually occur in any season and to anyone.
If you frequently find yourself with dry, cracked lips, there are plenty of things you can do to not only heal them but also prevent this from occurring in the future.
Exfoliate often.
Sometimes all it takes to eliminate dry skin is removing the dry skin on the surface. Your skin replenishes itself daily, so a gently exfoliator can help remove dead skin and make way for healthy skin underneath. Just be sure to apply a soothing balm immediately after.
Hydrate.
It’s true that healthy skin comes from within. Your lips may appear dry because you simply aren’t drinking enough water. Drinking more water can replenish the moisture levels in the skin on your entire body, not just your lips.
Use a vitamin-rich balm.
Flavored chapsticks may taste yummy, but they probably aren’t doing much to help. Instead, turn to balms high in vitamins A and E, with soothing oils like almond, coconut, and jojoba. These vitamins and oils can help bring back your skins natural moisture balance and prevent future chapping.
Protect from the sun.
Just like any other part of your body, your lips can easily become dry and cracked thanks to harmful UVA and UVB rays. Look for a chapstick with SPF in it to help protect this sensitive skin. Be sure to apply it every day—not just on beach days.
