Commonly Missed Areas to Clean in the Home

With a busy schedule, it’s hard to get around to deep cleaning your house, but it’s important to do this occasionally. Here are the areas that are often forgotten about, but should be paid extra attention to.

Inside the oven

After cooking a lot of recipes, food pieces and grease build up on the racks and on the floor of the oven. It’s crucial to make sure you take an oven safe spray and wipe down at least every six weeks. This eliminates the potential fire hazard of old food igniting.

Railings

The amount of germs on our hands from touching everyday objects would shock you. If you have stairs in your house, your railings need a little TLC every two weeks. Dead skin cells and germs are not only a health hazard but change the color of your railings overtime. Take a cleaner or a vinegar and lemon juice mixture and scrub away.

Doorknobs and handles

In the same vein as railings, handles and doorknobs catch all the germs and skin cells from hands. Bathroom doorknobs, especially, should be wiped with cleaner every two weeks. You can’t always count on kids washing their hands thoroughly before exiting the bathroom.

Inside of cabinets

The inside of your cabinets—from the kitchen to the bathroom—are bound to build up with dirt and dust. Putting clean dishes into a cabinet full of dust is pointless. Give your cabinets a good wipe down every week to keep your dishes free of dirt and dust.

Ceiling fan

Since it’s above your head and out of reach, you might forget to clean your ceiling fans. The top of fan blades will collect dust and should be cleaned at least every 8 weeks. This will prevent you from turning on your fan and creating a snowstorm of dust particles that will only enhance allergies.

Behind the toilet

There’s really no need to explain this one. Behind your toilet should be wiped down every two weeks.

Window tracks

Dust and even dead bugs collect on the tracks of windows, especially if you haven’t opened them in a while. Wipe down your window tracks every two months with vinegar and baking soda. During the summer you might consider cleaning more often, with the increase use of the window and even more bugs flying around.

If all of this seems overwhelming, create a home cleaning checklist and keep track of when you last cleaned each of these sites. Set reminders on your phone every so often to keep a healthy home.
