Corporate Wellness Perks to Look Out For

The competition is higher than ever before for hard-working employees at companies across the United States, which has given rise to a host of job perks in the fight for employee retention.

As of 2018, 67 percent of employers offered some sort of remote work, 70 percent offered wellness programs, and 22 percent offered free meals. And these numbers are anticipated to continue rising due to COVID-19. If you’re looking for a new job or if you haven’t investigated your current job’s perks, these are the free, money-saving wellness bonuses you should consider for your mental and physical well-being.

Gym membership or free classes

Exercise is paramount to your physical health, however, there are also impressive mental health benefits of fitness too. A lot of employers will cover the cost, either completely or partially, of a gym membership to encourage employees to boost their physical fitness and reduce stress. Additionally, some employers have started hosting online or in-person fitness classes. Yoga is a popular choice because of its accessibility for people of all fitness levels. If you don’t have these benefits already, ask your HR department if they would consider investing in fitness classes.

Financial wellness programs

Money can be a source of stress, which doesn’t help your performance at your job. Most employers want you to feel comfortable with your financial status will offer free presentations from third-party financial experts who can explain your 401K or benefits. Take advantage of these presentations by taking notes and consulting with your financial advisor.

Health app subscriptions

Your smartphone is a powerful device that you can use to your benefit. Apps such as Calm, Headspace, and MyFitnessPal offer resources to track and boost your mental wellness and physical habits. However, most wellness apps require a premium paid membership to have full access to its tools. Some employers have recognized the benefit of providing a free or reduced membership to these apps to give back to their employees in the off-hours of work. Ask your HR department if any such discounts exist or if they’d consider offering them.

Nutritionist services

Losing weight and eating healthy can be difficult when you have a busy life. Luckily, many companies offer wellness programs through a company dietician or discounts for a third-party program. Dieticians can be helpful in building a nutrition and exercise plan tailored to your goals. In one study, researchers say people who used a dietitian lost an average of 2.6 pounds while those who didn’t use a dietitian were more likely to gain weight.

Counseling services

Everyone needs help at some point or another, and sometimes the best remedy is to talk through a problem. Therapy is extremely beneficial for all types of people because it teaches life skills that can be used beyond the course of treatment. There are over 3,000 scientific studies that emphasize the positive effects of psychotherapy. Some companies have invested in on-site counseling services, while others offer insurance that specifically covers mental health services. It’s worthwhile to make sure your employer has some offering of mental health offerings if the need arises.

Jobs are an important part of your life, but it’s not the only important part. Your health and well-being should always be a priority before, during, and after work hours. So be sure you take advantage of any employee wellness programs mentioned here or others offered through your company.
