Yes, You Should Add More Turmeric to Your Diet

An anti-inflammatory diet has been all the rage this past year, and it typically includes a lot of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and yes—spices and herbs galore. One spice you may want to start sprinkling in dishes and drinks a little more liberally is turmeric.

Here are some benefits of this orange spice:

  • Curcumin—the active ingredient in turmeric—is what makes this spice so beneficial to your health. It mainly helps keep inflammation down. If you’re making a latte, try adding a dash of black pepper along with the turmeric, as it will help your body absorb the curcumin faster.
  • This spice helps with brain function, as well. Turmeric boosts levels of BDNF, a growth hormone found in the brain.
  • Turmeric can lower your risk of heart disease by working to improve endothelium, the lining of your blood vessels.
  • It can also aid in feelings of depression, boosting levels of serotonin and dopamine.

Ways you can incorporate turmeric into your diet:

  • A turmeric latte, sometimes known as “golden milk”, can be a great way to start your morning. Combine a generous teaspoon of turmeric with 1 cup of your choice of milk, and a tablespoon of maple syrup to sweeten. Add a dash of black pepper to activate the curcumin and top off your drink with cinnamon.
  • Turmeric also goes great in scrambled eggs, pancakes, naan, curry, rice, and in chicken dishes. Just be sure to only add a teaspoon to start, then add more to taste, so you don’t overdo it, as it is a powerful flavor.
