Stomach Remedies in Your Kitchen Cabinet

Gut health is an incredibly important aspect of our well-being, and it can be impacted by different foods, emotions, and even genetics. Whether you have a stomach of steel or you keep Pepto Bismol on standby, here are a few stomach remedies that everyone needs in their kitchen cabinets.

Turmeric

The anti-inflammatory qualities of turmeric help calm upset stomachs, nausea, and indigestion. It is available in vitamin form at most drugstores. If you’re a tea drinker, you can also mix ground turmeric into your tea for an all-natural digestive aid.

Chamomile tea

It’s no coincidence that many people who suffer from stomach troubles also deal with stress and anxiety. If your stomach pain seems to stem from stress, the anxiety-reducing and anti-inflammatory qualities of chamomile tea can work wonders. Sip on this natural stress reliever if you find your stomach in knots before a job interview, public speaking, or any other scenario that could trigger your fight-or-flight response.

Probiotics

Probiotics help restore healthy bacteria in your gut, so taking them daily can ease stomach pain. It’s especially helpful to take probiotics when you’ve been prescribed antibiotics. While antibiotics work to kill harmful bacteria in your body when you’re suffering from an infection, they can also destroy beneficial bacteria, causing stomach distress. Looking for a more immediate effect than a daily supplement? Sip on kombucha, enjoy Greek yogurt, or indulge in fermented foods like pickles or sauerkraut. All of these foods contain probiotics, which can ease stomach discomfort.

Ginger

People have been using ginger in many different forms to help calm upset stomachs for years. Whether it’s plain ginger, ginger ale, ginger tea, or even ginger snaps, ginger is sure to settle your stomach.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another option to work into your daily routine. It can decrease starch digestion, which helps starch reach the intestines. This helps preserve healthy bacteria in the gut. Many people take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar every day to prevent stomach pain. If the taste of plain apple cider vinegar bothers you, mix a teaspoon of honey into a cup of water. Then, mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into the cup. This will balance out the acidic taste of the vinegar.
