Here’s Why the Walking Craze Won’t Be Dying Down

If there’s one thing we’ve all had in common during these times, it’s experiencing the benefits of walking. Even if you’ve just seen people on social media talking about walking more, it’s been a fitness trend that has risen in the ranks to be a favorite among many. Here are just a few reasons why the hype won’t be dying down any time soon. (And why it shouldn’t!)

It’s good for your brain.

Of course, your initial reason for lacing up your sneaks and heading outside is to get in some physical fitness, but walking is beneficial to your brain health as well. Walking is shown to improve memory skills, and, when you think about it, this makes sense. When you’re walking, you’re typically in an introspective state of mind; thinking about the past, present, and future. It will also help get those creative juices flowing!

It will give your mental health a boost.

Feeling stressed, drained, or negative? One walk may not cure you of this mindset, but consistent daily walks will greatly help manage feelings of negativity. Research has found that as little as a ten-minute walk can decrease stress levels.

It’s low impact.

Sure, intense workouts may result in more calories burned, but it’s important to complement high-intensity activity with something that’s less impactful on the joints. Walking may be the answer. And while it’s low impact, it doesn’t mean you won’t break a sweat, especially if you choose to power walk or you pick an area with a lot of hills.

It can strengthen your immune system.

One thing that we could all definitely benefit from these days is a boost to the immune system. Walking could help lower your risk for long-term diseases such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis. It may even help you live a longer, healthier life.
