Tips for Lowering Your Grocery Bill

Inflation continues to weigh heavily on many people, raising concerns for the upcoming holiday season. It’s possible you are trying to cut back on expenses right now in preparation for the upcoming season. Since food shopping is a necessity but grocery prices are at a high, here are a few ways you can save more on your grocery bill this month.

Check for coupons

Clipping coupons is a great way to save money on your grocery bill. Many manufacturers release coupons for items through the Sunday paper and online that you can then use at your local grocery store. You can also check for coupons available through local stores since many will have some listed on their websites. And even if a coupon doesn’t initially seem like that much, when you use multiple coupons per trip, the savings can really add up.

Shop with a list

If you’ve ever gone to the grocery store without a list, you’ve likely noticed that you pick up more items than you initially thought you would. When you shop without a list, you’re often just getting what looks good or what you think you might need. A list is a great way to cut back on excess spending since you know exactly what you’re getting and what you need it for. You can plan your meals a week at a time and add the items that you don’t already have in your fridge or pantry to your list. You can also simplify your meals, looking for recipes with fewer ingredients, which can help cut back on the number of items you need to buy each week.

Check for deals

Grocery stores tend to have weekly sales with discounted prices on different items. You can take the time to check the ads before go shop, looking to see if there are any deals on the items that you need. When you find something that you regularly use at a lower cost, consider stocking up on that item. Though you’ll spend more initially, you’re saving in the long run since you’ll get it at a reduced price. You can also base your meals and shopping list around that week’s deals and get more items for cheaper. This can save you money while also helping you come with some tasty and creative meals.

Consider buying generic brand

If you tend to only reach for name brands, consider looking at the generic brands that many popular grocery stores have. Take a moment to compare the ingredients, and it’s possible you’ll find that you’ve been paying more for the exact same thing since many store brand items are manufactured by the same companies that produce name brands. So do yourself and your wallet a favor and read the labels the next time you shop and see if you can benefit from buying the cheaper product.

Consider subscription services

Subscription meal-kit services are a great option if all the prep for couponing and searching for deals seems like a bit too much work. It’s possible you’ve heard that meal kit services are too expensive, but they can actually save you money on your grocery bill. Services like Dinnerly and EveryPlate have meals that start at $5 a serving, and you’re only paying for the exact ingredients you need for those meals. There’s practically no prep work and you don’t have to make a trip to the store, so you can save yourself the time and the money by searching for a service that’s right for you.

With just a little forethought, you can lower your grocery bill and put extra money into your savings every month. Your wallet will thank you when it comes time to pay for holiday presents and decorations.
