Does Double Cleansing Actually Work?

Over the past six months, I’ve made bettering my skincare routine more of a priority. I’ve never had extremely problematic skin, but I still felt like I was missing a certain glow—that je ne sais quoi. I started putting more TLC into my routine, which included investing in higher quality products, and, yes, a jade roller. (It really does something, okay?)

I also took to doing more research into various skincare products—what it is they actually do for your skin, and whether or not they’re right for me. Of course, this takes me down a weekly rabbit hole of reading article after article related to skincare, which led me to hearing about double cleansing. This Korean beauty technique can help unclog pores from any makeup or grime that builds up throughout the day. Most dermatologists recommend cleansing first with an oil-based cleanser, then going in with a water-based cleanser. So, I decided to give this technique a whirl for a week and see if I noticed any improvements to my complexion.

Products used:

Farmacy Green Clean Cleansing Balm

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser

The first night trying out double cleansing was after an intense workout (an ideal time to start practicing this technique). I went in first with a cleansing balm, which is technically a makeup remover, but it was the only oil-based formula in my cabinet. After thoroughly massaging the balm into my skin, I rinsed my face with warm water before moving on to using my usual cleanser. I repeated this method every night for one week before I went to bed, and would continue with the rest of my routine: vitamin C serum and moisturizer. After night one, my skin already felt pillowy soft.

I surprised myself in sticking with this technique for an entire week—to the point where I’m considering making it part of my nightly routine. This extra step made me immediately notice a difference my skin; it felt softer and appeared healthier. While the extra minute or so isn’t ideal (especially after a long day when the last thing I want to do is a 10+ minute skincare routine), I’ve found it to be worth it. At this point, I’m willing to try just about any trend for a little extra glow.
