Protein That Tastes Good, No Whey!

There is a lot of controversy over what diets are effective and why. No one is certain about the best way to lose weight, because everyone’s bodies are different. One aspect of nutrition experts agree on is that protein helps you feel fuller for longer. If you aren’t getting protein from food sources, supplements like whey protein have become a popular alternative

What is whey protein

Whey protein is the watery portion separated in milk when it’s unpasteurized, commonly used to make cheese. It can be refined into powder form, which is how people generally consume it. If you’ve opened a container of yogurt and stirred in the liquid on top, that’s whey. It’s a protein concentrate studied for its benefits with weight loss. On its own it doesn’t taste appetizing, so it comes in a variety of flavors.

Benefits of whey protein

Protein is essential to building muscle, and proper organ and hormone function. Adding more protein into your diet helps these systems in their growth and repair processes. Often, it is difficult to find high sources of protein when you need them after working out, and this is where whey comes in. The benefits of whey protein depend on your body. Typically, it aids weight loss, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and might have anti-cancer properties. Taking whey protein is a quick way to add 25–50 grams of protein to your diet.

Drawbacks of whey protein

As with any product, there are side effects if consumed in improper amounts. Be aware and consult a doctor as to what amount of whey protein is safe to consume. Some reported side effects of consuming whey protein include headache, nausea, and thirst.

Popular types of whey

Not all whey is created equal. Each have different benefits and vary in amounts of protein.

Concentrate

70–80 percent protein; contains some lactose and fat and is known for its pleasing taste.

Isolate

90-100 percent protein; contains less lactose and fat and lacks the nutrients found in whey protein concentrate.

Hydrolysate

Also known as hydrolyzed whey, it’s been predigested, so it gets absorbed faster.

Now that you know what whey is, the benefits and drawbacks, and the various types, you can make an informed decision about what is best for you and your body. As always, consult a doctor before changing anything in your diet and routine.
