Weighted Blankets … Are They Worth the Splurge?

If you’re someone who pays close attention to health trends, then you’ve probably heard a thing or two about weighted blankets. They’re shown to help people suffering with anxiety and/or insomnia, due to the feel of being “grounded”.

This feeling helps produce a more restful slumber. They also create higher levels of serotonin and dopamine, which decreases levels of cortisol—a stress hormone that increases feelings of anxiety. This calming effect can do wonders for a good night’s sleep, as well as your overall well-being.

Weighted blankets are also good for focus—there are weighted vests on the market that can be put to use during the day. But mainly, they’re meant for before or during sleep, in which they optimize a calm and relaxed state of mind. Weighted blankets also make you feel safe, so for those suffering from various disorders, it’s proven to be an alternative means of dealing with various problems. While it’s not a replacement to medication, there have been studies done that show it can be a useful treatment.

It’s best to buy weighted blankets made of natural materials, like cotton. Other synthetic fibers will increase how hot the blanket makes you feel, giving you the opposite effect of what it’s intent is. You can find them on Amazon or Bed Bath & Beyond, among other smaller retailers. Some brands offer customization, including optional monogramming, added weight, and other personalized features.

Make sure to consult with your doctor before purchasing a weighted blanket.
