How to Keep Allergens out of Your Home

Allergy season is among us—not only are we now combating indoor allergens, but we have to deal with the outside as well. Here are a few ways to rid your home of bothersome allergens.

Double-up on doormats

This is probably one of my favorite tips—having a doormat outside your home will help catch the majority of dirt and debris you have carried with you, and the second mat inside acts as back up. This helps to eliminate most of the debris tracked throughout your home.

Wash those curtains

Curtains are a hotspot for both indoor and outdoor allergens. Wash them as often as possible—or better yet, invest in blinds that are much easier to clean than fabric.

Invest in easy-to-clean furniture

Upholstered furniture can be difficult to clean and tends to hold onto dirt and debris easily. It’s better to invest in furniture that will be less of a hassle to clean, such as leather.

Air purifiers

If you tend to have serious allergies and or asthma that flairs up in the spring, try looking into an air purifier to cleanse pesky pollutants lingering in your home. This can be especially useful if you have pets in your home.

Shoes

It’s best to keep any shoes you wear during the spring away from the rest of your home. Keep shoes in a mudroom or store on a rack in the garage. That way, nothing gets tracked into your house. You may even want to go the extra mile from time to time and clean your shoes if possible.

Before you start sneezing this spring, make a few adjustments to your home that will keep allergens at bay.
