The Mindset You Need for a Career Change

Change is hard at any point in life. We are creatures of habit, and tend to enjoy a daily routine. Whether you are about to tackle a big promotion, or maybe something you didn’t have much of a say in, here are some ways to grab a hold of the new and uncertain feelings that come with a career change.

Remember what you have to offer

Keep your strengths in mind, and apply them to the objectives of your position to remind yourself if you are where you want to be, or if you plan on moving on, what you can bring to the table. Ask yourself: how will this tie back into your personal goals and the company’s goals as well?

Apply the skills you took away from your previous job

If you are moving up or starting fresh, you can learn a lot from what you did wrong or what you did right in the past. Maybe the same issues you dealt with in your last job aren’t completely the same as what you will be dealing with in your new position, but you can take away broad concepts and apply them to your new position.

Acceptance

Sometimes it’s hard to let go of old responsibilities and take on new and unfamiliar ones. Take what you learned from where you once were, and allow it to let you grow into that new position.  Don’t be fooled, learning to let go is a skill, and often times easier said than done. Dwelling on change won’t get you anywhere, but acting on it sure will. Keep a positive mindset and make the most of the current opportunities you have in the workforce. You never know what lies ahead.

Attitude

Become an optimist–find the best in the seemingly worst of situations. Look at circumstances as the glass half full. Maybe you got assigned the parking spot that adds a five-minute walk to your building. Look at it this way, this gives you five extra minutes of fresh air and exercise that no one else will have in the morning. Maybe things are new and different, but find the silver lining in your new routine and focus on all you have to gain, not what has been lost.

You may be exactly where you want to be in your career, or at the beginning of a long journey, but whatever point you are at in life, you can control what lies ahead based upon the attitude and outlook you have. Be optimistic, utilize your strengths to work toward fortifying your weaknesses, and find yourself taking on this new path with ease.
