Nine Affordable Ideas for Summer Fun

It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing you’re not living your best summer life unless you’re vacationing at a fancy resort or traveling to exotic locales. But the truth is, there are plenty of ways to have a magical summer that don’t involve spending a ton of money or even leaving your hometown.

What if the true essence of summer can’t be captured in a square photo or condensed into a clever hashtag? You just need a few simple joys, some genuine connection, and a little creativity. Check out some of the following ideas for affordable fun in the months ahead.

Ice-pop making

Two lemon popsicles

There’s nothing like a frozen treat on a hot and sticky summer day. If you have some fruit that’s about to go bad, toss it in a blender to create some homemade ice pops. You can find plastic or metal molds in stores and online or simply use paper cups and popsicle sticks. The flavor combinations are endless, so let your imagination run wild.

You-pick fruit

Fancy frolicking through an orchard this summer? Many local orchards offer pick-your-own experiences where you can wander the field and fill up your own basket or two of their produce, such as strawberries, cherries, peaches, or blackberries. Orchards also often have small markets with jarred, canned, and baked goods from local makers, and some even provide activities for children—a perfect way to spend an afternoon!

Local flavor

Try being a tourist in your own town and rediscovering the local culture. Check the calendar in your local paper or Facebook group to see events like community concerts, festivals, farmers markets, and street fairs. You could also make dinner plans at a restaurant you’ve never been to or try a new dish at a favorite spot.

Grill night

Corn grilling on grill outside

There’s something special about dining outdoors in the summer; even when the days are hot, the evenings may still cool down to the perfect temperature. Have some friends over to grill ears of corn, burgers, and hotdogs, and for dessert, break out the marshmallows and skewers for s’mores. And don’t forget to grab some outdoor torches with mosquito repellent so your guests aren’t the ones getting eaten.

Picnic adventure

Make a favorite spot in your local park even better by packing a basket of goodies to bring with you. Grapes, cherries, cheese and crackers, olives, and sparkling drinks create the perfect outdoor picnic to enjoy on a beautiful summer day. Bring a big blanket to spread out on, or commandeer a picnic table if it’s available.

Water balloon fight

This summer classic will never go out of style. When the temperature soars, grab some friends and form teams for an epic water balloon battle. To be kind to the environment, try a set of reusable water balloons that can be refilled to your heart’s content. These ones from Soppycid are made of silicone and have a magnetic suction closure, which means even kids can fill them up and seal them with ease.

Neighborhood badminton

Why not get some exercise while having a good time with friends and family? Badminton nets and racquets are a one-time investment for a whole summer of volleying joy. If you play frequently enough, you might find yourself hosting a regular neighborhood meetup.

Movie marathon

When the sunshine has worn everyone out, a night in front of the television is a welcome change of pace. To add excitement, create a movie theme for the evening, such as 1980s comedies or time-travel adventures. Have concession-themed snacks on hand like Milk Duds, buttered popcorn, gummy worms, and Swedish fish. Make sure to have plenty of comfy seating, pillows to lean on, and blankets to cozy up in.

Arts and crafts

Summer is a great time to engage your creative side. Take a watercolor pad and tin outside to a park and paint the local wildflowers, or buy a carving tool and some soft-cut linoleum to try your hand at linocut. And, of course, tie-dye is practically a rite of passage. Grab some cheap white T-shirts at the crafts store or scour a thrift shop for light-colored clothing you can transform into a brightly colored masterpiece.

With a little ingenuity and tapping into some childhood favorites, affordable summer fun is within reach for everyone. Whether you’re exploring local parks, slurping a homemade ice pop, or challenging neighbors to an epic game of badminton, there are countless opportunities to create priceless summer memories without breaking the bank.
