Organize Your Online World
You’ve likely heard of feng shui, the ancient Chinese practice of arranging pieces intentionally to promote better balance and positive energy.
But while it’s traditionally applied to interior design, its principles are equally relevant in our digital spaces. Just like a cluttered room can leave you feeling drained, a messy inbox or crowded desktop can quickly become chaotic. So if your devices have become more stressful than supportive, it might be time to use these tips to bring some harmony to your online life.
Start by Decluttering Delete unused apps, archive or remove outdated files, and unsubscribe from emails you no longer need. These take up space, both physically and mentally, and clearing them out will create more room for the things you care about and need easy access to.
Practice Home-Screen Mindfulness Choose a calming wallpaper for your phone and computer, such as a picture of a loved one or a snapshot from your favorite destination. Then arrange apps according to how frequently you use them, hiding or removing ones that distract you, like social media or news apps. Doing so will keep your digital spaces peaceful and intentional.
Set Boundaries Turn off nonessential notifications and use Do Not Disturb when appropriate during work hours and personal time to help you stay in the moment. Also consider setting app limits in your phone’s settings or using a tool like Freedom, which will allow you to manage your screen time across all devices.
Create Positive Habits Keep your digital spaces organized by building small rituals that support a more positive mindset. This could mean pausing before you start scrolling, closing all open windows at the end of the day, or evaluating your phone apps once a month. No matter how small, such habits can help shift your tech use from mindless and habitual to purposeful.
