How to Make Time for a Traveling Partner

With a busy schedule of your own, and your partner constantly traveling for work, it’s hard to make time for each other while miles apart. The trick to dealing with distance, is learning how to still do things together– but separately.

Talk regularly

Regardless of the distance between you and your partner, be sure to make plans  in advance for designated phone time. Otherwise, a lack of communication can cause a disconnect while you are already missing their physical presence.

Resolve issues

Never leave your partner angry or unsettled. Letting your problems grow will be much harder to fix without your partner physically present. It is much better to hash things out in person then over the phone. It is easy to misread a text or phone call because you are missing social cues you usually get from a face-to-face interaction.

Do the same activities

Watch the same show or movie so that you have something in common to talk about together that you both thoroughly enjoy.

Tune in

In the time you do have to talk to your partner, pay attention. Don’t create unwanted animosity by being a bad listener. While you are no doubt busy and tired from being on the go, listening to what your partner has to say is really important to stay in touch and keep a solid connection.

Make a future plan

Have something to look forward to upon your partners arrival. Make a plan ahead of time to go out to dinner, make a nice meal, or go to the movies. Just something fun to make the time away a little easier knowing you will have something fun to look forward in the near future.

Distance doesn’t have to be added weight in your day-to-day life. Long distance needs communication and effort that any relationship requires, just with a different means of doing so!
